Hello and greetings fellow Otaku,
Recently a local school system in Maryland removed the first volume of the popular manga series Dragon Ball. The book was removed from the schools collection because of sexual content including partial nudity and other sexual innuendo that would be considered as inappropriate for young children. However the school system accepts the use of graphic novels for children who are not interested in other forms of reading. The book in question will be going under review to determine it’s future.
My Thoughts
As for my thoughts on this story, I have some mixed emotions. First off, why would a school system allow this type of book into their collection in the first place? Did they ever consider to check the age rating on the back of the book to see if it is appropriate for their students. Keep in mind that Dragon Ball has a general rating of 13+, this means that this manga is suitable for those who are 13 years of age or older. Usually manga in this age range contains the content in question, so in all honesty the school should have considered looking at the book content wise before making a decision to put it in their collection.
However, I feel that readers themselves should decide on what books they want to read. Whether it be Harry Potter, One Piece, Shaman King or any other book or graphic novel out there, we have the right to read what we want. And if parents feel that what their children are reading is inappropriate, then don’t let then read it. It as simple as that.
And on that note, this wraps up another edition of the week in anime. So until next time, remember that their is a ton of great anime and manga out there. All you have to do is find it. Ltrs.
